WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) issued the following statement after the Senate Judiciary Committee reported out -- on a party-line vote -- the nomination of Debo Adegbile to serve as Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division.

"I was disappointed to see the Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee support Mr. Debo Adegbile and report his nomination to the full Senate on a party-line vote. I appreciate that all eight of my Republican colleagues opposed the nomination. Unfortunately, all 10 Democrats voted in support.

"Mr. Adegbile volunteered to represent Mumia Abu-Jamal, who murdered police officer Daniel Faulkner in 1981. As Officer Faulkner's widow explained in her letter to the Committee, Adegbile was part of a legal team that extended her grief for 32 years, spreading misinformation about the crime and falsely proclaiming Abu-Jamal's innocence. I will continue to urge my colleagues to oppose Mr. Adegbile's nomination and defeat it on the Senate floor."
