Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Pat Toomey
(R-Pa.) issued the following statement on President Biden’s misuse of Section
232 of the Trade Expansion Act to impose tariffs on aluminum from the United
Arab Emirates:
“Imported
aluminum from the United Arab Emirates does not pose a national security threat
to the United States, nor has it ever. Using taxes to coerce American companies
to purchase domestically sourced aluminum is nothing more than an insincere
populist talking point. In actuality, taxes like this have hurt American
consumers, cost workers their jobs, and plagued the American manufacturing sector
for the past several years. There was a bipartisan congressional effort during
the previous administration to rein in unilateral executive authority to levy
these taxes. This decision by President Biden proves this effort should
continue.”
