Allentown, Pa. - U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) applauded the efforts of two Lehigh Valley companies working to help the people of Haiti recover from hurricane Matthew.

The island of Haiti still had not recovered from the 2010 earthquake that killed 200,000 people when hurricane Matthew struck. The devastation increased the need for food, water, and resources to address a serious humanitarian crisis.

To aid in relief efforts, Jaindl Farms, the Orefield-based turkey farm, is donating 40,000 pounds of premium turkey products. B. Braun, the medical device company, coordinated the transportation to the island.

"Helping the people of Haiti highlights the very best of the people of Pennsylvania," said Sen. Toomey. "It's great to see two Pennsylvania companies from two different industries team up to make a real difference. The employees at Jaindl Farms and B. Braun should be proud of their efforts to assist the Haitians as they struggle to recover from not one, but two, natural disasters."

"My family, management, and staff at Jaindl Farms are happy and proud to help those in need," said David Jaindl, president of Jaindl Farms. "We would like to recognize B. Braun, led by Caroll Neubauer, chairman and chief executive officer, for meeting the transportation needs getting the product to Haiti. Sen. Pat Toomey was instrumental in bringing this need to our attention and strongly advocated that this effort become a reality."

In coordinating these efforts, the companies worked with Lehigh Valley resident Dr. Sara Viessman, who has long been affiliated with Haitian relief. Israna and Gerald Germain, who work with Dr. Viessman and Lehigh University's Sustainable Development Program, will deliver the generous food donations by Jaindl Farms once in Haiti. The combined efforts of Lehigh Valley businesses and residents will provide both nutrition and hope to thousands of Haitians rebuilding their nation after destruction.
