Fighting the Opioid Epidemic

Working Together to Fight the Opioid Epidemic

While in Washington County this week, I joined Congressman Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA 14) and local officials at the City Mission homeless shelter to discuss the resources and partnerships needed to effectively combat the opioid and heroin epidemic in our state.

The visit gave me the opportunity to hear how City Mission has achieved tremendous success fighting addiction with a holistic approach to recovery. We also discussed the work I'm doing at the federal level to combat the opioid crisis.

In recent years, the federal government has passed two landmark pieces of legislation -- the Comprehensive Abuse and Recovery Act in 2016 and the SUPPORT Patients and Communities Act in 2018 -- aimed at fighting this deadly crisis. While progress has been made, more is needed. Congress should pass my bipartisan legislation to fight the importation of illicit, deadly fentanyl.

This crisis will not end overnight, but I know by working together, we can save lives.

Protecting Animals from Abuse

I'm continuing my work to protect the lives of defenseless animals by reintroducing the bipartisan Prevent Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act. The PACT Act outlaws a heinous form of animal abuse known as "crushing," where deranged individuals maim and torture animals.

Crushing defenseless animals is barbaric, disgusting, and wrong. There is no place for it in our society. I call on my colleagues to join me in ending this horrific practice once and for all. Last year, this bill passed the Senate unanimously. It's time to get the PACT Act approved by both chambers of Congress and send it to the president for his signature.

Read more about the PACT Act in the Ellwood City Ledger.

Sitting Down with the Tribune-Review

While in Pittsburgh this week, I sat down with Jamie Martines of the Greensburg Tribune-Review. We had a great conversation about a wide-ranging set of issues from border security to gun safety laws. Having just left City Mission, I shared my view that local community support is essential to effectively fight the opioid and heroin epidemic.

I appreciated the chance to meet with Jamie to discuss my views on the most important issues of the day. Read more about our conversation here.
