Toomey Receives Award for Supporting Farmers

September 12, 2016

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) has been honored with the "Friend of Farm Bureau" award by the American Farm Bureau Association, a voluntary organization governed by and representing farm and ranch families across the country.

"I'm proud to support legislation that helps Pennsylvania farmers thrive and create jobs," Sen. Toomey said. "Pennsylvania is an agricultural powerhouse and its farmers play an essential role in feeding America and bolstering the state's economy. I thank the American Farm Bureau Association for this recognition and am honored to accept this award."

"The American Farm Bureau Federation gives the "Friend of Farm Bureau" award to members of Congress who have supported Farm Bureau issues, as demonstrated by their voting records, and who were nominated by their respective state Farm Bureau," said Dale Moore of the American Farm Bureau Association. "Congratulations, and thank you for your support of America's farmers and ranchers and food security for America's consumers."

Sen. Toomey has supported legislation that would ease burdens on small, family farms and cut through the red tape coming out of Washington, D.C.

In 2014, Sen. Toomey led a bipartisan effort to oppose the European Union's attempt to prohibit American dairy producers from using common cheese names such as feta, parmesan, and muenster. A majority of Senators joined his effort to oppose this unfair treatment.

Toomey advocated for language that was included in the 2015 Highway Bill that allows states to ease federal regulations that unfairly hinder farmers from transporting their crops and farm equipment.

Sen. Toomey also worked with his colleagues to successfully pressure the Department of Labor into retracting a proposed rule that would have prevented young farmers from working on family farms.
